An intuitive solution for the everyday accounting and business finance necessities of freelancers and business owners.

Mexico's intricate financial landscape is governed by SAT, a government institution responsible for tax collection, invoice processing, and ensuring adherence to all legal financial regulations. Enter docDigitales, a comprehensive solution that empowers freelancers, knowledgeable accountants, and business owners to streamline their everyday financial tasks. After the successful launch of our web app, we are thrilled to introduce the docDigitales mobile app.

The Outcome

In 2019, docDigitales made its debut on the Play Store, serving our existing web app users within months. Notably, we experienced a surge in new users, and most importantly, an increase in paid plans sign-ups, a testament to our effective approach in simplifying complex business finances in Mexico.

The Process

Inspiration

The journey began with immersing ourselves in the daily lives of those who rely on accounting software. We understood that users often faced challenges with SATs interface, prompting them to seek alternatives like docDigitales. Glitches and poor user experiences were driving users towards paid solutions. Before venturing into the mobile space, we needed a deep understanding of the pain points of the current web app and the unique challenges posed by mobile platforms.

Interviews with business owners and freelancers unveiled invaluable insights that would shape our mobile app design. For instance, one user shared that clients often requested invoices on the spot, and mobile phones were their constant companions. This affirmed the need for a mobile solution that could seamlessly replicate the web app's capabilities while providing intuitive accessibility. We also leveraged insights from existing docDigitales web users to enhance the overall user experience across both web and mobile platforms.

Ideation

Armed with insights from interviews, the design team embarked on a journey of ideation and refinement. Recognizing the need for a user-centric approach, we organized a design sprint that involved various stakeholders and team members, including customer success and our call center team. We aimed to incorporate diverse perspectives into our design process.

These are the very first wireframes for the main components of the app, we kept some ideas like the dynamic dashboard experience and the shape of the lists.

The first two days of the sprint were instrumental in mapping out the project and honing in on our target audience. Sketches emerged from post-interview discussions, and our target became more defined. We realized that not all features of the web app needed to be replicated on the mobile platform. While tools like invoices were essential for daily, on-the-go use, more intricate functions such as payroll didn't require constant access. Our prototype encompassed invoices, a client table, sign-up and tutorial sections, and a personal finance dashboard—all of which resonated with our current clients during testing.

Implementation

With a clear vision in place, the design and engineering teams collaborated to bring the mobile app to life. The implementation involved front-end work by designers, including myself. Although it didn't require backend integration, it involved leveraging Xcode and Android Studio.

A UX manual takes into consideration the user's journey through the app, how different hand gestures would trigger different actions within the app, and how they can navigate through its features.

Our mobile version was accompanied by a user-friendly tutorial that guided users through maximizing the app's potential. We also provided clear information on each plan's capabilities and pricing. This approach ensured that users could dive into the app with confidence, knowing exactly what they were getting and how to make the most of this powerful tool.

In summary, the docDigitales mobile app is a testament to our commitment to simplifying financial processes for Mexico's freelancers, accountants, and business owners. Our user-centric approach, guided by extensive research and ideation, has paved the way for a seamless and intuitive mobile experience.
